We did speak to the royalty but since very little is available on her we used whatever theory was available.” You are not looking at a look or a fashion statement you are working on making Jodha bai’s character look good. Whenever you are working with Ash you are working for the character-that makes a designer’s job fairly easy. Lulla has been working with Ash for ages now but this time it was a completely different experience for her. The most striking feature of the look though is the warm colour palette-more of yellows, saffron and emerald greens used by the Rajputs for Ash and the golds, browns and beiges used by the Mughals for Hrithik.

Keeping in mind what the look would have been in that period and also using our creative ability in keeping with that era was the biggest challenge. “It’s an epic romance with not much reference and evidence, only paintings. It took six months for Lulla and Ashutosh to get the costumes ready which included researching the fabric and colours, designing, the making of the costumes and then of course loads of trials for the entire cast. We went to Jaipur to sourse the fabrics and the colour schemes to suit that time period,” says Lulla. We did refer to a lot of paintings of that era along with a lot of theory. I did read this one particular book to go through Akbar’s life history and the events. Obviously, a lot of research went into it and Ashutosh had done a lot of detailed research for costuming and garments which he passed down to me. “Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film was too good an offer to refuse.
